Pitchfork’s Best New Music Albums

i did this really quickly but I believe that the previous 22 entries are snapshots of the last 22 artists to get “best new music” album ratings on pitchfork (in basically random order, not in the order they were selected).

i have often felt that pitchfork doesnt take women artists (let’s define it as artists where either the main vocalist or the primary songwriter is female) very seriously and that when they do, it’s usually limited to a certain *type* - i call that type “elfin” but i do notice that if you do a websearch, both Robyn and Bethany Cosentino have something in common - both are regularly described in articles as “petite blonde.”

anyways, these last 22 “best new music” artists does nothing to un-do my impression of pitchfork’s critical filter when it comes to gender.
